Unlocking Myanmar’s Biomass Potential: From Agricultural Waste to Green Fuel

Jul. 09, 2025

Myanmar, an agrarian powerhouse, generates vast amounts of agricultural waste—from rice husks and peanut shells to timber residues and cotton stalks. For decades, these materials were burned openly or discarded, contributing to air pollution and resource waste. Today, they are powering a sustainable energy revolution, driven by innovative biomass pellet machines.

Abundant Raw Materials: The Feedstock of Change

Myanmar’s peanut farms alone produce shells ideal for compacting into high-calorific fuel blocks. In Magway, factories process discarded shells into dense pellets, replacing firewood and charcoal. Each ton of this biofuel conserves forests and provides households with cleaner, affordable energy—retailing at just MMK 250–300 per 1.6 kg (≈$0.12–0.14/kg) . Similarly, rice husks, a byproduct of Myanmar’s dominant rice industry, are now utilized in biomass power plants like the China-Myanmar collaborative 20.7 MW facility in Golden Mountain. This plant consumes 21 tons of husks hourly, cutting CO₂ by 96,100 tons annually .

Community-Scale Solutions: Magway’s SOE Factory produces 2 tons of peanut-shell pellets daily, aiming for 10 tons. These pellets generate high heat with minimal residues, certified for domestic use and export potential.

Large Power Generation: The Golden Mountain biomass plant, built by China's Sinoma Energy Conservation, showcases industrial-scale conversion. Despite earthquake damage in early 2025, rapid repairs highlighted its critical role in stabilizing Myanmar's grid.

Future Expansion: Great Wall International plans 120 MW biomass plants across Mandalay and Sagaing, projecting completion within 18 months upon approval. Their model offers farmers income from previously burned waste.

The Technology: Biomass Pellet Machine as the Core Innovator

Biomass pellet machines compress loose residues into dense, burnable pellets. Key advancements include:

Versatility: Machines like Bolida's automated pellet machines(capacity: 1000–15000 kg/h) process diverse inputs—rice straw, sawdust, or cotton stalks.

Efficiency Optimization: Modern systems feature alloy steel molds, adjustable pressure rollers, and central control systems to handle varying material densities. For example, Bolida's CE-certified pellet press achieves 1–2 t/h output with 12–15% optimal moisture content.

Scalability: Small flat-die pellet machines suit rural workshops, while industrial lines support large plants.

Triple-Win Benefits: Economy, Ecology, and Energy Security

Economic: Pellet production creates rural jobs. Farmers earn from"waste,” while factories like Magway's retail pellets at competitive prices.

Ecological: Replacing open burning with pelletization reduces PM2.5 and CO₂. The Golden Mountain plant alone offsets coal-equivalent emissions.

Energy Resilience: Biomass pellets provide reliable electricity in fuel-scarce regions. Projects like the 200 kW gasification unit in Ayemyar Village power rice mills and homes using local husks.
